Fowler 1PAL Engine No. P11812
1.5 H.P, 750 RPM. Manufactured 1939
(Low Speed)

This engine was acquired in December 2000 in a very rough condition. The photos illustrate this, notable problems being the severely bent crankshaft, missing magneto, carburettor and fuel tank. It was later found out that this engine drove quarry plant and during it's fairly recent removal (within the last 15 years) the engine was accidentally dropped several feet resulting in the bent crank and smashed bearing casing. The engine was completely stripped and found to be in good mechanical condition. The flywheel was removed and the badly bent crank discarded for a spare. The main ballrace bearings, as usual with Fowler's were rumbling slightly, however in this case they were deemed re-usable for the rallyfield. Once cleaned and oiled they have turned out ok and have become significantly quieter as they have 'bedded' in again with fresh oil. The missing parts were obtained from rallies and other enthusiasts who are always willing to help out. An interesting feature with this engine is the complete lack of crankcase breather. The crankcase door is blank and because this engine has the cast iron governor housing the small brass breather is not present either. This engine appears to be completely original and runs well without any form of breather ! The other interesting feature is the Wolseley Style exhaust silencer. I made a new exhaust using the old one as a pattern and a new Wolseley exhaust as the foundation for the new Fowler exhaust. I haven't seen an exhaust like this before on a Fowler as they were generally fitted to small batches of earlier engines. Because of this I often get asked if the exhaust is the original type. I am often told it is the wrong type of silencer but I always have to hand the display board shwoing a copy of an original factory photo showing this style of exhaust.
