The Story Behind a Famous Engine !

Keen Fowler enthusiasts amongst you may recognise this engine and I am very pleased to have it in my collection. Featured on the front cover of David Edgington's Fowler P Type Engines book, originally printed in 1992 this engine is the very engine featured on the front cover !
Click on the cover image for further details and other published photographs of this engine.

Originally found and restored by Philip Thornton-Evison who regularly contributes to the Stationary Engine Magazine, this was one of Philip's first engines and has been in preservation for 30 years. When found in around 1974 the engine was in a rough condition with several parts missing which were replaced with suitable fabricated replacements to get the engine going. This included a fabricated crankcase door and oil filler, Lister D fuel tank and a new exhaust fabricated from a Hillman Hunter car silencer !

I acquired the engine from a fellow enthusiast in December 2002 having already passed on from Philip's collection. I jumped at the chance of this engine when offered and am very pleased to have it as a central part of the collection. At present the engine is awaiting a new set of main bearings, a de-coke, possible replacement valves, change of oil and a complete re-paint in a fresh coat of red with new transfers. Some superficial transit damage to the fuel tank will also be repaired. There are no plans to replace the non-original parts as this is part of the history of the engine and I wish to retain the authenticity of the published photos of this engine for the future. The engine will require a new trolley to be made as part of the re-restoration.

I have had the engine running when I first acquired it and having not run for a number of years it fired up relatively easily, albeit with a terrible screech from the badly worn bearings. One new bearing was supplied with the engine and I recently obtained the other required new spare. The engine will be re-restored as soon as time permits and I hope to write a small article on the engine for publication in the Stationary Engine Magazine once the restoration has been completed.
