Acquired in May 2005, this set originates from Wigtownshire, Scotland and had been previously restored around 8 years ago. The set had been exhibited in the past but has been laid up for around 5 years, not being run during this time. The set was constructed by an agricultural engineer when the engine and pump were new and can be considered as an original plant set up. The engine is in good condition and only requires a cosmetic restoration and some minor repairs to get it back to running order. The pump is in a similar condition and was fitted with new seals and plunger during the previous restoration. The engine and pump are mounted on a purpose built steel frame and the pump is driven by a fibre gear on the engine crankshaft. The use of the fibre gear is to protect the plant in the event of pump seizure or a closed head - the gear would strip saving expensive repair to the engine and pump, only a new gear would be required. The engineer who built this unit also built at least one other identical pump set using a Wolseley WD2 engine matched to an identical pump. This unit was also rescued not far from our Fowler set and has now been restored and was seen at the 2004 Hethersgill Rally, near Carlisle. |
