One of my favorites, this engine was given to me by a friend who thought it was not a restorable prospect, however I knew it would be anice running engine so decided to restore the engine to working condition. A further incentive was the fact this was my first Fowler engine and I was keen to have a finished Fowler I could exhibit at rallies! From the photos it is clear the engine was a basket case requiring a magneto, exhaust and several other smaller parts such as oil filler and governor housing cover. The engine had been badly frosted in the past and brazed up, this repair was checked and seemed ok. As an experiment a new crankcase door and governor housing cover were cast successfully from Aluminium, as a result the parts look original and you would hardly know the were new! A new exhaust was fabricated based on the original dimensions and a fuel tank was obtained, repaired and reconditioned using a special treatment kit. A new set of main bearing ball races was also bought as the originals were badly worn. This is one of the smoothest running engines I have seen thanks to the VERY heavy flywheel and as a result will happily tick over at working speed without any unbalance or vibration. The photos show the engine on it's first test run and since then has been finished with transfers and rallied several times, including two years at Astle Park. Unfortunately the engine suffered a terminal water jacket failure at Astle Park 2001 and has been deemed unfit for repair as the previous frost damage is too severe to weld. The engine will require a spare engine block to restore. Although the engine runs it is badly worn on the bore so a replacement block with piston will cure this. |
