Radiator cooled 1PA engines are a rare
find and this page examines what may be the only restored
radiator cooled 1PA being rallied in the UK. Many thanks
to the owner, Philip Thornton-Evison for providing the
photos of this nicely restored engine. Unfortunately the
engine number is not available for this engine therefore
accurate dating may not be possible, a rough guess would
be around 1940.
The engine was recovered from a garage
around 1987 and subsequently restored in 1988. The engine
required a lot of work including new valves and guides,
cylinder rebore, reground crankshaft/big end, new main
bearings, magneto rewind and repairs to a badly frost
cracked radiator.
The close up photos show in detail the
differences between the standard hopper cooled engines
and the radiator cooled models, in particular the flat
square cylinder head if of interest, as is the original
fan and radiator assembly.
