Twin Flywheel Engines

A further Fowler 1PA rarity is the Twin Flywheel version which appears to have been used mainly in sheep shearing outfits. These engines were usually fitted with two lighter three spoked flywheels as shown in the photo opposite. (apologies for the quality of the photo!) however early photos do indicate two standard flywheels as an option - see photo below.

The thin flywheels were much narrower than standard which helped minimise weight yet provided a twin flywheel engine capable of smooth balanced running. A twin flywheel engine using two standard flywheels must have been very heavy to manouvre.

Twin flywheel engines appear to be more popular in Australia and New Zealand due to the larger sheep shearing industry that exists over there compared to the UK.

Image courtesey of David Edgington's 'Fowler P Type Engines' book showing a lightweight twin flywheel engine in unrestored condition. This is later seen in the same book fully restored.
A further extract from the 'Fowler P Type Engines' book showing a very early twin flywheel 1PA. This engine has the cast iron carburettor, Lister D style fuel tank and twin standard early style spoked flywheels.
A nicely restored Fowler 1PA seen at the Scone Palace Rally, Perth, Scotland. This engine is a replica twin flywheel engine which has been built by the present owner to a very high standard. It must be a very smooth running engine with the twin standard flywheels !

I would be very keen to receive any other information or photos on twin flywheel engines
to add to this website.
