Coventry Victor Midget (MW2) This engine was acquired from a friend in 1997 having lain unused for many years. This engine was supplied new in March 1957 to T. Franze of Amsterdam who were the Dutch Coventry Victor agents. Records state that this engine was one of a batch of twelve prepared to "Show Finish" for exhibition purposes. On inspection the engine is virtually unused and appears to have been test run only. The engine was discovered in a warehouse in Edinburgh, how the engine found it's way from Amsterdam is unknown. The engine has been rebuilt into a 24volt generating set mounted on a steel frame, similar to the original setup shown in the sales advert. Several years previous I had been given a 24V DC BTH generator which had been originally direct coupled to a motor. When I acquired the Coventry Victor I knew immediately this would be an ideal sized generator to make a replica set. The engine has been fully restored and runs very well, unfortunately the magneto has since proved faulty and will shortly be sent for a rebuild. The cooling tank which we initially used proved too small and the engine quickly boiled the contents and would run too hot. In marine use this engine would generally draw a continuous supply of cold water which would keep the temperature down. When the cylinder heads were removed the water jackets had minimal surface rust only and patches of grey cast iron could be seen proving how little use this engine has had. During the restoration a lot of improvising was carried out to make the set, more details when you click the thumbnails. |
