Wolseley produced a number of 'Special Application' engines
as part of the complete range of products. This page focuses on the
various examples of these engines that can be found in preservation
today.
Wolseley Pumping Sets
The direct coupled pumpset was built in a range of
sizes to suit a variety of duties. The engine differed in that it
was rated at a higher horsepower/RPM and was fitted with a lighter
balanced flywheel. The engine crankshaft formed part of the pump
impeller as the impeller blade was keyed directly onto the crankshaft.
The pump body was bolted straight onto the main engine crankcase.
An interesting feature of these sets is the means which the operator
can top up the water hopper. A small 'tap-off' feed with stop cock
was taken off the main pump outlet and piped into the water hopper.
The operator could then quickly top up the hopper by opening the
stop cock which would refill the hopper. Obviously this had the
disadvantage of introducing dirt and silt into the hopper if the
pump was being used for pumping dirty water.
