WLB1

The WLB1 range was introduced at the end of 1946 as an attempt to produce an engine with a larger power output than the WD range. The WLB1 was essentially an overbored WD type with larger diameter crankshaft to cope with the higher power output. The main external change was the use of a welded steel plate hopper rather than the cast iron type previously used. Why this was introduced is unknown, perhaps Wolseley felt it cheaper and easier to manufacture than a cast iron version ? The WLB range was available in either petrol only or petrol/paraffin form with one or two flywheels depending on the application. Ignition was by Wico magneto. Not many WLB1's have survived into preservation, those which have survived create a lot of interest on the rallyfield as many people think the hopper is not original. The photo above illustrates a petrol/paraffin twin flywheel model.
